5 Measurement in Conformity Assessment

MINET Glossary

Concept[1]

Definition

Notes

Conformity assessment demonstration that specified requirements relating to a product, process, system, person or body are fulfilled [ISO/IEC 17000:2004 3.1]
Specified requirement need or expectation that is stated [ISO/IEC 17000:2004 3.1]
Quality Characteristic

Characteristic

Inherent characteristic of a product, process or system related to a requirement. [ISO 3534-2:206 §1.1.2]

One could add:…intended to be assessed”

Verification provision of objective evidence that a given item fulfils specified requirements (2.44 VIM)
Reliability
Validation verification, where the specified requirements are adequate for an intended use  (2.45 VIM)
Validity MINET:

  • Construct validity: correspondence between e g fatigue & indicant – another type of uncertainty
Detection limit

limit of detection

measured quantity value, obtained by a given measurement procedure, for which the probability of falsely claiming the absence of a component in a material is β, given a probability α of falsely claiming its presence  (4.18 VIM)
Entity error

error

actual value of the quality characteristic of an entity minus a reference value for that characteristic
LRP: Entity error should not be confused with measurement error.
Maximum permissible error

limit of error

extreme value of error, with respect to a known reference value, permitted by specifications or regulations. LRP: VIM 4.26 refers incorrectly to “measurement” error
Measurement accuracy

accuracy of measurement

accuracy

closeness of agreement between a measured quantity value and a true quantity value of a measurand (2.13 VIM)
Measurement accuracy

accuracy of measuring system

accuracy

A quality characteristic of a Measuring system (or element thereof) of the closeness of agreement between the displayed value of the system and a true value. LRP: Should not be confused with measurement uncertainty, which is associated with the measurement result instead and not primarily to the measuring system
Measurement trueness

trueness of measurement
trueness

closeness of agreement between the average of an infinite number of replicate measured quantity values and a reference quantity value (2.14 VIM)
Measurement trueness

trueness of measuring system
trueness

A quality characteristic of a Measuring system (or element thereof) of the closeness of agreement between the average of an infinite number of replicate measurements of the displayed value of the system and a true value.
Measurement precision

precision

closeness of agreement between indications or measured quantity values obtained by replicate measurements on the same or similar objects under specified conditions (2.15 VIM)
Measurement precision

measuring system precision

A quality characteristic of a Measuring system (or element thereof) of the closeness of agreement between indications obtained by replicate measurements on the same or similar objects under specified conditions.
Constraint
